SUDARSHANA CHAKRA

Shivaratri is the tithi (lunar day) on which Brahma and Vishnu had worshipped Shiva. A vrata is a special religious rite that is performed. A vrata observed on shivaratri (the night dedicated to Shiva) is particularly important. It brings undying punya. One stays up at night and prays to a linga. One also has to observe a fast.

There used to be a hunter named Rurudruha. He was not at all righteous. In fact, he was quite evil and cruel. He killed many deer and he was also a robber and thief. Naturally, Rurudruha knew nothing about shivaratri vrata.

But it happened to be shivaratri when the hunter's parents, wife and children felt very hungry. They asked Rurudruha to go and get some meat so that they might eat. The hunter went to the forest to kill deer, but could not find any. It was already evening and no game was to be seen. Rurdruha found a water-hole and decided that he would keep a vigil there. Sooner or later, some animal was bound to turn up. He climbed up onto a bilva tree that was by the side of the water-hole. And in case he should feel thirsty, he kept a pot full of water next to him. There he waited.

Soon a doe turned up to drink water. The hunter picked up his bow and arrow. When he did so, the tree shock and a few bilva leaves fell on a linga that was right under the tree. Bilva leaves are sacred to Shiva. Some water spilled from the pot and also fell on the linga. Rurudruha did not of course know this.

But the doe saw the hunter. Don't kill me right now, said the does. My children and husband are at home. Let me go and bid them farewell. When I return, you are welcome to kill me.

The hunter was in no mood to let the doe go. Does an animal return to be killed? But the doe took an oath and Rurdruha let her go.

After a short while, another doe turned up to drink water. The two does were sisters and both of them married to the same deer. As before, the tree shook and bilva leaves and some water fell on the linga.

The doe saw the hunter and said, Wait for sometime before you kill me. Let me say goodbye to my husband and children.

The hunter was reluctant to let the doe go. But the second doe also took an oath that she would return. So Rurudruha decided to wait.

After the doe had gone, the deer turned up to drink water. And when the hunter picked up his bow and arrow, bilva leaves and water again fell on the linga.

The deer said, Hunter, let me go now. I will come back and you can kill then. I wish to bid adieu to my two wives and children.

The deer also took on oath that he would return and Rurudruha let him go.

After some time had passed, the two does and the deer came to where Rurdruha was. Each said, Kill me and spare the others. They need to stay alive to look after the children. The baby deer had also accompanied their parents. They said,Kill us. We don't wish to stay alive when our parents are gone. The hunter was so surprised at these developments that the tree shook again. Bilva leaves and water fell on the linga.

Shiva now took pity on Rurdruha and removed all evil thoughts from his mind. The hunter spared the deer. Shiva himself appeared before Rurudruha and said, From now on your name will be Guha. You will be so blessed that Rama will become your guest.

This story demonstrates that even if shivaratrivrata is performed unconsciously, great punya is obtained.

Paris And Britney BFF: Badly, Foolishly, Frocked

Paris Hilton, the Doyenne of Dull, may be sinking from the A-list but she is firmly anchored to the hull of Mr. Blackwell’s Worst Dressed List. However, even this accolade she must share. Hilton and newest gal pal, pop princess Britney Spears both share the top spot this year for the duo who could most do with a lesson in style.

From the fleeting moments of yesteryear when all the adoring press had Hilton on their lips, it is now de rigueurto spit the name like a cocktail of UV orange vodka and Mountain Dew. With the world watching her in all the wrong places, Paris has finally earned a post somewhere deserving. For the 47th year, self-appointed fashion guru Mr. Blackwell named all the latest and greatest who apparently should hang in the gallows with their stylists immediately following.

Called “style free and fashion deprived,” Hilton and Spears were also dubbed “Screamgirls” by the octogenarian Blackwell whose own opinion on fashion can be traced to his success as a popular Los Angeles clothing designer in the 1960’s. Without mentioning their insistence on going commando, Blackwell described Hilton and Spears as “two peas in an overexposed pod.”

The Los Angeles-based heiress made a name for herself along with ex-buddy Nicole Ritchie on Fox’s ‘The Simple Life’. A much-ballyhooed feud between the two simmered Hilton’s press but the photographers kept on coming to capture the occasional crotch shot and nipple droop. Along the way she came out with a self-titled musical debut which opened at number 6 on the Billboard 200, while continuing as party girl deluxe.

Hilton and Spears share the dubious title with such luminaries as the Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla Parker-Bowles (“a royal wreck”), Lindsay Lohan (“tragically trapped in the fast lane” ), Mariah Carey (“queen of catastrophic kitsch”) and Meryl Streep.

Britney Spears Fashion Disaster: Name that Bag!

Just when we thought she was doing the slightest bit better, Britney Spears is at it again. At what you may ask, well at dressing herself in fashion disasters. There may have been a time in many of our lives where we wore tiny shorts and itsy-bitsy shirts that were popping open and thought we looked ok. Britney Spears does this too. Problem is that she is now 25, mother of two, and constantly in the spot light. Other major problem is that she *knows* she will be in the spotlight. Does she not check out a mirror? Does no one from her entourage try to subtly tell her, "hell no do not do that"? Guess not. If she would like, I will assist her in covering her body up and I will do it for free. Yes, I am that kind. At least she is sporting a new handbag. This bag I actually dig; it is funky with its brass stud detailing. While her fashion is a disaster, her bag is hip. So let's stop making fun of her and just play Name that Bag!

Funny Moments of Cricket

'bhajji A Menace On Field, Ban Him For Life'

Former Australian Test umpire Lou Rowan on Wednesday labelled Harbhajan Singh a menace on the field and called for a life ban on the temperamental off-spinner for slapping India teammate S Sreesanth.

"This fellow (Harbhajan) doesn't belong to the game of cricket. He has shown he is no good. They should just get rid of him from the sport," Rowan told The Courier Mail.

"I don't know what other sport would want him, though," he added sarcastically.

Rowan, who stood in 25 Tests between 1963 and 1971, said Harbhajan comes across as a rogue player in whatever he has seen of the Indian tweaker's on-field behaviour.

The Australian felt the 11-match ban imposed on him by the Indian Premier League (IPL) was a light punishment and his actions deserved a stricter sentence.

"I certainly don't think he would have been allowed to get away with what he has been allowed to get away with in any other sport. They should just get rid of him and move on," he said.

After being banned from the IPL, Harbhajan is now awaiting the verdict from a separate disciplinary inquiry to be conducted by the BCCI.

The temperamental bowler has already given his reply to the Board's show cause notice and has apologised for his conduct.

However, his penchant for landing in disciplinary trouble with alarming frequency has not gone down too well with the Board, which backed him to the hilt during the racism row with Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds a couple of months ago

I modelled myself after Sachin

He was born in Nagpur and brought up in Mumbai, but the latest top gun in the Indian cricket batting line-up, Rohit Sharma, is a Hyderabadi at heart. Rohit’s parents are from coastal Andhra and are now settled in Mumbai. Though the 20-year-old cannot speak his mother tongue, Telugu, he can “understand it quite well,” reason enough that he loves the big team in the Indian Premier League.
“I am very, very happy to be playing for Hyderabad,” Rohit told this correspondent after a practice session. Hyderabad snapped up the hotshot at the IPL auction for $750,000, the kind of money the youngster has never dealt with.
Understandably, the reliable batsman cannot hide his excitement. “It’s a pleasure to play alongside the big names,” he says of the star-studded Hyderabad side that includes Adam Gilchrist, Andrew Symonds (both Australia), Herschelle Gibbs (South Africa), Shahid Afridi (Pakistan), Scott Styris (New Zealand), Chaminda Vaas, Chamara Silva and Nuwan Zoysa (all Sri Lanka). “With a line-up like that, we should give the other teams a run for their money,” he says.
Rohit is a hard worker, the sole bread winner in the family — his father used to work for the Railways and mother is a housewife. Rohit has a brother who is studying in the USA.
The youngster shot into the limelight by scoring heavily in the Mumbai inter-schools tournament which earned him spots on State junior teams as well as the India U-19 side, all off which he capitalised on to spring into the Indian team.
“I have modelled myself after Sachin Tendulkar,” says Rohit, who will eventually take up the master batsman’s position of No. 4 in Tests after the big bat bows out from the game.

Crowds will love Symonds: VVS

V.V.S. Laxman, Team Hyderabad’s captain in the Indian Premier League, says there will be mixed reactions from the people to Australia’s Andrew Symonds playing in the league. However, Laxman foresees no trouble and says people will love Symonds if he makes match-winning contributions to the team. The Aussie all-rounder has been involved in spats with a number of Indian players including Harbhajan Singh and Ishant Sharma on India’s ongoing India’s tour Down Under. “There will be mixed reactions to Symonds playing here. But when he contributes to the team’s success, I believe people will love him,” Laxman said at the announcement of the final list of players for the Hyderabad team on Monday. “I know Symonds personally. He’s a thorough professional and a match-winner. He’s an asset to the team,” he added. About possible sledging on the field, Laxman said, “There may be few instances (of sledging) because, with so much at stake, the games are likely to be played aggressively.” The elegant Hyderabadi middle order batsman said he expected the team to do its best to win the inaugural edition of the IPL. “We have players who can win matches single-handedly. If we play to our potential, we can win the championship.” The list announced on Monday was without Hyderabad Ranji pace bowler N. Sarvesh Kumar, who had been earlier picked from among a string of promising young players. He had to be omitted from the final list after the BCCI decided not to sign contracts with under-19 players, saying it would distract them during the ongoing Under-19 World Cup in Kuala Lumpur. Laxman said he was sorry for youngsters like Sarvesh who wouldn’t be playing in the league, but added, “Under-19 players are the future of Indian cricket. BCCI must know what it is doing and will surely act for the good of the boys and Indian cricket.” Team Hyderabad will play 14 matches — seven in Hyderabad and seven away. They begin their campaign against Kolkata in an away match. About the IPL itinerary which adds to the already tight schedule of international players, he said, “The schedule must have been drawn up keeping in view the ICC schedule and available dates.” Laxman said he had no regrets about foregoing icon status in the team’s interest: “Cricket is my priority and I was keen on getting the best players for the team.” Team Hyderabad: V.V.S. Laxman, Adam Gilchrist, Andrew Symonds, Herschelle Gibbs, Scott Styris, Shahid Afridi, Chaminda Vaas, Chamara Silva, Nuwan Zoysa, R.P. Singh, Rohit Sharma, N. Arjun Yadav, Dwaraka Ravi Teja, Pragyan Prayish Ojha, Doddapaneni Kalyankrishna, P. Vijay Kumar, Y. Venugopala Rao and Halhadar Das. Coach: Robin Singh. Manager: Vijay Mohan Raj.

Gilly wants Hyderabad right on top

Hard-hitting Australian Adam Gilchrist has served a warning to the rivals of the Hyderabad team in the Indian Premier League as he promised much more of his swashbuckling stroke play during the 44-day tournament that kicks off on April 18. “You will see the same free-flowing Gilchrist, and I want the Hyderabad team right on top,” the Hyderabad vice-captain told this newspaper in an exclusive telephonic interview. Excerpts:
How do you look at Twenty20 cricket?
I must admit that I was a reluctant starter with it, uncertain whether it will hold a place in the cricket society but am well and truly convinced having experienced it more and played a little bit that it is a valuable product. If used well and wisely, it will help the Board in promoting it in developing cricket nations and also introducing new audiences to the game. It is an entertainment product and something I really look forward to being a part of.

Critics question your motivation level in IPL because you have already retired from international cricket…
That’s not the way I see it. Anyone who has played international sport realises that the competitive instincts in you get activated the moment you are in any type of competition, be it a friendly match or a Test match. Once you’re in you’re addicted to the competition. Just because I’ve retired from international cricket doesn’t mean I will lose that competitive instinct and the desire not only to see the Hyderabad team succeed but also see this concept succeed because I’ve given myself to the competition. So, I want to make sure it’s successful and look back in 20 or 30 years like the gentlemen involved in World Series Cricket (in the 1970s) who must be very proud of what they did for the game. I want to see the IPL succeed just as much as anything and obviously want the Hyderabad team right on top. I will be enjoying and playing just like I have been doing all along.

Now that you are no longer with the Australian team, how do you practice to stay in form?
In the Australian team when you’re together, you’re training as a group but when you get time in your home state you train on your own. I’ve got a batting coach in Perth I’ve always used for 10 years. I’ll utilise his services as usual and stay fit irrespective of whether I am playing any cricket or not. I’ve always had a healthy lifestyle so I don’t see any of that as being an issue personally.

Commentator Tony Greig says you retired early for IPL money…
No, he’s incorrect. I am not sure where Tony is getting that information from but that’s ill informed. I respect Tony and get on well with him. When I announced my retirement, I was not eligible to play in the IPL because there was talk of a two-year stand off period where you weren’t allowed pre-mature retirement. I am not sure what the rule is or whether it should be invoked without perhaps players taking legal action but I am happy to go on record to say it wasn’t the reason I retired. I just realised it was time to move into a new phase of life. It is a wonderful bonus for me that IPL has come around at this stage and I am very excited being a part of it, particularly in this inaugural year and wherever it may lead to in the years to come. I am thrilled that I am getting this chance even though I have decided to finish my international career but I definitely didn’t say I am going to prematurely retire to go and chase big dollars in the IPL.

Could the recent bad blood between Australia and India have been avoided? What can be done to restore good relations?
I don’t think for a moment that the relations are beyond repair. It’s obviously been a dramatic few months and there have been many issues but the way to move forward is for everybody to reflect on that time, learn and move forward. Not just not players but the administrators, sections of the media can learn from that time and identify the mistakes and attempt not to repeat them. Things happen at the spur of the moment, decisions are made and then you try and deal with it. We cannot change what’s happened but let’s just learn from it. The rivalry that is well and truly entrenched in India-Australia contests is great… it’s healthy as long as we all remain accountable and responsible for our actions.
In a funny kind of way I think everything that has happened has only come about because both teams respect each other as the No.1 and 2 teams in the world whether that is proven statistically or not — South Africa may be heading the ICC rankings but I think Australia and India are the top two teams. In the 10-12 years that I have played, Indians are the ones who consistently gave us the toughest battles.

As regards sledging, Harbhajan Singh says you are not a saint on the field either…
I don’t hold any grudge against Harbhajan at all. I agree I am not a saint and I don’t see many playing international cricket... I am yet to come across one to be honest. I guess he was referring to any verbal jousting on the field and I’ve been part of that ever since I’ve been playing competitive cricket in Australia… that’s the way we were brought up. It’s very apparent in international cricket, not just the Australians or the Indians in recent times… it’s been going on forever. Obviously, there is a point you reach when you make a decision as a player whether you want to pursue it further or if it’s cut off point. Hopefully, I will always walk away before it reaches that point. Even now I have a few verbal joustings with Harbhajan on the field but I have found him an interesting guy off the field. He is one of the best bowlers I have faced, with whom I have had some amazing tussles. But I have enjoyed getting to know him off the field as I have known plenty of opponents.

Can IPL mend fences because most of them would be playing on the same teams?
Yes, I think the IPL is very timely in that regard. One of the unique things about sport, especially cricket, is every country has a different style of players, some rely on slow bowling, some on fast bowling, some on attacking batting. The conditions vary from country to country… there is something wonderfully unique about a home and away series. Some teams are more aggressive than other sides, some players are more aggressive than others within the team. But the great thing about IPL is we will learn more about each other and about each other’s cultures and customs and the countries that they come from. That will promote better understanding.

Do you think Twenty20 will affect the one-dayers and the more pure, Tests?
The one-day game may be affected and perhaps limited a little bit. I don’t see ODIs disappear but T20 may encroach on that territory. But I believe Test cricket will continue to flourish. Tests survived the onset of one-dayers some 20 or 30 years ago and I don’t see T20 overtaking Test cricket. Players will still very much want to represent their countries in Test cricket as well.
Let’s see how the first IPL goes, by which time the administrators will know more about it, players will know more about it. There will be a time when everything will settle down and international cricket will be the focus but the IPL will be an extremely exciting component of the world schedule. I think that’s the only positive for the game.

Having been a walker yourself, do you think very few players walking these days even if they know they are out coupled with increasing umpiring errors, is affecting the game?
The umpiring is coming under so much scrutiny these days with technology, TV cameras and press exposure. The expectation from those guys is greater than those of the players so any mistake is highlighted so much. I have always been reluctant to talk about increasing use of technology in umpiring but I am starting to think we might need to go that way. The resources, money and the training are not being reinvested into umpiring to see them get better at the rate that the game is moving. I feel sorry for the umpires.
With regard to walking, I think that’s an individual choice, you do or you don’t. What I can’t tolerate is selective walking —you do it at times when it looks good and don’t during crunch time.

Given India’s recent show, do you think the Australian domination of world cricket is beginning to end?
Not for a moment do I think Australia would fall by the way side… I think they will still remain competitive but it remains to be seen if they are able to dominate like the team that has done for 10 or 12 years. What people should realise is that when you lose almost 50 per cent of your team — the likes of Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Justin Langer and Damien Martyn, it’s going to affect the balance of the side and have short-term remedial effects. Australia has managed to maintain a strong standard since last summer when those guys left and there’s another challenge now as another player leaves them to fill that void. The reality is once you lose bowlers like Warne or McGrath that does bring you back to the ground a bit.

How much do you know about Hyderabad?
I have been there on a couple of fleeting visits, about eight years apart. I love Indian food and am very fond of the biryani, which I realise is very famous out of Hyderabad too, something I am very much looking forward to. I love the spicy stuff and can’t get there and have plenty more of the local fare.
But I am really looking forward to learning more about the city and making many friends there. When I do something I do whole-heartedly and commit to it. It’s exciting to open up a new area I’ve been to. Of course I am very happy to be playing alongside VVS Laxman, with whom I’ve locked horns with on the field several times. He always used to smash us around.

What can Hyderabad expect from you?
Hopefully they’ll see more of what they’ve seen in my international career, both on and off the field. I play the game to enjoy. The aspect of cricket that I love most is the fact that you are in a team, you’ve got teammates, supporters and support staff to share that experience with. That will be no different in this concept. I can’t wait to link up with some of these guys I’ve been playing against for a number of years. Also, getting to help some of the Indian youngsters is going to be the intriguing part of the tour. Hyderabad can expect a happy face, hopefully smiling all of the time and someone who’s looking forward to learning a lot from them as well.

Deccan Chargers unleashes war cry

The Deccan Chargers entered the cricketing arena with a war cry on Tuesday as their jubilant captain, V.V.S. Laxman, said that quality cricket is great entertainment in itself and does not need any Bollywood star to promote it. The skipper’s comment was given added impetus by the thunderous drumming which accompanied the colourful launch of Deccan Chargers, the the Deccan Chronicle IPL team for Hyderabad, at Novotel in Hitex on Tuesday evening.
“I think ultimately IPL is a cricket tournament and people will come to see great cricketers playing,” said Laxman. “With my colleagues I’ll try to play the best cricket we can. That’s the biggest entertainment for a cricket fan.”
The team would be represented by a charging bull, signifying strength, power and aggression while the red and gold bands on the flag stand for dominance and victory. Deccan Chargers have already acquired a fan following, going by the enthusiastic messages scrawled over the board. ‘Blast the rest,’ read one, ‘Charge your way through, Deccan,’ said another.

Vice-captain Adam Gilchrist of Australia said in a video message that he was very excited at being the vice-captain of the Deccan Chargers. While thanking the Deccan Chronicle for “setting the team up in a professional manner,” Gilchrist said he was “looking forward to forming a great relationship with the passionate fans.” Laxman also lauded the efforts of Deccan Chronicle in getting Hyderabad a team in the IPL. “Cricket is not only passion or religion but karma; it’s part of everyone’s lives,” he said. “Over the next few years we will have more youngsters from this part of the country representing India.”
“Deccan Chronicle group has always believed in promoting sports including cricket and the Deccan Chargers is our way of contributing to this vision. We are confident that Deccan Chargers would inspire a whole new generation of young cricketers in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa to build on their talent and reach greater heights,” said Mr T. Venkattram Reddy, chairman, Deccan Chronicle. “We will always and play with this spirit,” said J. Krishnan, CEO of Deccan Chargers.
He also echoed Laxman’s words when he said there won’t be any film stars on the ground. “We’re talking about cricket here,” he added. “Our team is good enough to entertain the spectators. I don’t think we need any film stars to woo the crowd.” And Laxman added in good measure, “My and my team will go all out to entertain you.” “We will take cricket to the grassroots in Hyderabad, Andhra and Orissa by setting up academies of international standard which will groom youngsters and help them realise their dreams,” said Mr Krishnan.
Earlier, the show began with dynamic drum beats as the Hyderabad Cricket Association president and state labour minister, Mr G. Vinod, unfurled the team flag. It was interspersed by dances by a Latina trio and Sameera Reddy, not to forget the foot-tapping drumming by Taufeeq Qureshi and his band called Mumbai Stamps. Skipper Laxman and Coach Robin Singh were visibly proud. “I’m in an enviable position,” said the captain. “Any cricketer of my team can play at any position. So the team management can decide the batting order.”
Robin Singh was also happy to see so many match winners in one team. “I’ve played with some of them and have coached others,” he said. “It’s going to be tremendous experience.” And there need not be any anxiety about the Aussies in the team gelling with the Indians after the recent tempestuous tour. “I know Gilly (Adam Gilchrist) and Symmo (Andrew Symonds) very well,” said Laxman. “They are not only great cricketers, they are good human beings. Forget about sledging and concentrate on cricket.”
The entire squad of Deccan Chargers was also announced on the occasion. They include: V.V.S. Laxman (captain), Adam Gilchrist (vice-captain), Andrew Symonds, Herschelle Gibbs, Shahid Afridi, Chaminda Vaas, Scott Styris, Chamara Silva, Nuwan Zoysa, R.P. Singh, Rohit Sharma, N. Arjun Yadav, Dwaraka Ravi Teja, Pragyan Prayish Ojha, Doddapaneni Kalyankrishna, P. Vijay Kumar, Y. Venu Gopal Rao, Halhadhar Das, Sanjay Bangar and Sarvesh Kumar.

Admission to AIT

Since the admission in AIT i.e Army Institute of Technology is on the basis of AIEEE Merit. Also its the only Institute in India as of my knowledge has only one kind of reservation,i.e one is only eligible for admission if you belongs to Army background.Even there is no reservation for Airforce and Navy.

So,I appeared in AIEEE in may 2003,I'm not happy with my performance but who cares I enjoyed whole of school life in full masti and joy without any tension, because whenever I got stuck somewhere, parents always their to help me out.

When the result of AIEEE is announced, I'm not eligible for central councelling, bit upset after the results, but for short span of time. After some time I forget about that and started doing my daily routine works.Soon I received a call letter from AIT.The letter states that I'm eligible for admission in AIT.

I told about this to my dad, after listening to this dad was so happy and I'm exited to join this institute.I collected all the required documents and my dad arrange tickets. My councelling date is scheduled on 28th july 2003.So I left for Pune with my dad on 25th july, reached Pune on 26th and rested on 26th.Visited college on 27th to meet one of student, whom dad knows.

When I met him,he advised me to opt computer science as a branch. But when I got a chance to opt any stream, computers is already filled. But,I don't want to select any other stream that is not related to computers,so, I opted Information Technology.
